Dr. Valentin Robu is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, where he co-leads the Smart System Group. Before coming to Heriot-Watt he obtained his PhD from CWI, Amsterdam, and was a senior research fellow at the University of Southampton and a visitor in the Harvard CS department. He also has a secondary affiliation in the Center for Collective Intelligence Group at MIT in the US.

His research interests are in multi-agent systems, algorithmic game theory, and some areas of machine learning, and their applications to a variety of fields, especially smart energy systems, logistics, asset monitoring and robotics. He has published widely in these areas in the top conferences (IJCAI, AAAI, AAMAS etc.) and journals (JAIR, AIJ, JAAMAS , IEEE TSG etc), and collaborated with researchers from a variety of universities and companies.

He is currently Principal or Co-Investigator in several large-scale research projects, including the UK National Systems Integration (CESI), Community Energy Demand Reduction in India (CEDRI), Network Constraint Early Warning Systems (NCEWS), ORCA Hub (Offshore Robotics for Certification of Assets), and Responsive Flexibility of Energy Systems (ISCF Reflex).
